Unlocking Tomorrow: Because Our Future Matters More

  • BronxArtSpace (entrance on Spofford Ave) 700 Manida Street Bronx, NY, 10474 (map)

Opening Reception: Saturday, August 1, 7-9pm
The opening follows the closing of It Takes a Village, curated by Beverly Emers at BronxArtSpace.

Unlocking Tomorrow: Because Our Future Matters More is the first implementation of what will be a multi-faceted public art project that celebrates the transformation of The Spofford Detention Center, a dark place, into the Peninsula, a compound of 740 100% affordable apartments, an art center (Inspiration Point), commercial and light industrial space, and a one-acre open-air plaza.

The core components of the project are story gathering about Spofford and its closing, the selection of Bronx-based artists by community members, who then work with apprentices that have some connection to incarceration. This process is in itself metamorphic and points to the project’s main goal of “Transforming History and Meaning through Art”. The opening coincides with the closing of "It Takes a Village" earlier in the day at BronxArtSpace up the hill, curated by Beverly Emers, and thematically linked to "Unlocking Tomorrow..."

NOT FORGOTTEN
We acknowledge the violence and forced displacement of the Original stewards of this land, the Munsee Lenape.
We acknowledge the youth who were detained and experienced institutional violence at Spofford.
We celebrate the community that organized to close Spofford and advocate for its transformation into The Peninsula.
