Self-Organize / Auto-Organizar looks at work that challenges and reimagines the physical, emotional, and geographical boundaries of identity. These artists investigate the construction and destruction of identity, of what constitutes being through the use of their body, installations, books, interviews, videos, and paintings. The exhibition asks us to reflect on how, what, and why we are taking matters into our own hands through the works of artists who mobilize, respond, expose, heal, and rebuild together. Often, it is artists that lead efforts to address the needs of their community when the system, the government, and aid fall short.
At the opening reception on Wednesday, November 15, 6-9pm, Proyectos Sabrosos / Sabroso Projects invite visitors to join the Decolonized Republic by registering and receiving a passport with a new visual identity for the post-resistance in Puerto Rico.

A three-venue exhibition between Andrew Freedman Home, BronxArtSpace and Swing Space, STATE PROPERTY is a multidisciplinary examination of American consumerism of prison labor and our daily choices to purchase, condone or reject goods created in penitentiaries. The exhibition asks guests to consider more carefully what “Made in the U.S.A” currently means in relation to the incarceration system and corporate outsourcing. Currency and choice (or lack thereof) are the springboards towards a much deeper dialogue that recognizes these present injustices. Read the full press release. BAS inaugural Summer Residency + Open Studios program responds to a crucial need for affordable studio space and professional development for emerging Bronx artists. For 6 weeks, 6 Bronx-based artists have 24-hour access to studio space at BAS gallery and the Bruckner Building and are awarded $500. Throughout the residency, BAS organizes studio visits with curators, writers and other artists for residents. Artists were chosen by a panel of art professionals including Gabriel de Guzman and Stacey Gershon.

Charismatic Chroma is a hybrid installation of fine art and a fake science laboratory. The gallery will become a dynamic working space with paintings, 3-dimensional objects of uncertain purpose, and living plants. With shared interest in pattern, neon, and the great outdoors, the four artists create the absurd with references to pop nostalgia and cheap goods.
